George Dickel rye is leading the remarkable comeback of American Rye. Historically, rye was the dominant whiskey in the United States up until Prohibition. After WWII consumer preference shifted to Bourbon although ryes continued to be popular in Canadian blends.
However, George Dickel rye is somewhat unique. George A. Dickel & Co. distills Tennessee whiskey. It is similar to Bourbon but the new whisky distillate is filtered through sugar maple charcoal before it is aged.Dickel has elected to follow the same practice with their rye.
Interestingly, they do not produce the new make whiskey. They purchase a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley from Midwest Grain Products (MGP) in Lawrenceberg, Indiana. They then chill it , filtered it through charcoal and age it in new charred oak barrels for five years.The result is an ultra-smooth whiskey with a hint of citrus and a rye bread taste. It’s stands on its own but excels in cocktails such as a Rye Manhattan an Old Fashion or the classic Sazerac.

Tasting Notes —
Color: Orangish caramel
Nose: Dill, rye and spice dominate the nose which is typical amongst young MGP ryes. Orange candy, brulee and notes of grain, raw sugar and touches of fruit and caramel hang out in the background.
Palette: Dill, rye and a sharp spice again dominate but this time bring notes of citrus zest, caramel, vanilla and a box of warm baking spices with them. Light fruit and a touch of astringency float lightly over the palate and blend into the background.
Finish: Long and driven by notes of rye, spice, dill, vanilla, caramel and a slightly herbal. Not like gin herbs, more earthy and leafy than that.
