In 1888, Paul Jones Jr, trademarked the name Four Roses. During the 1930s, 40s and 50s Four Roses was the top selling Bourbon in the United States. Indeed, it was my father’s favorite.
Ironically, the sale of Four Roses in the United States was discontinued in the sixties. Instead, it became a valuable export and dominated the markets in Asia and Europe where it remains a top selling brand today. In the early 2000s, a decision is made to bring this wonderful whiskey back home. And by 2004, it’s back on American shelves.
Today, Master Distiller, Brent Elliot, oversees production at the Louisville distillery. The company prides itself on owning five proprietary strains of yeast that produce ten distinct recipes. The strain of yeast used in Four Roses single barrel is version “V”, which is described as being delicate fruit, spicy, and creamy.
The mashbill consists of 60% corn, 35% rye, and 5% malted barley. As a result, it yields a complex, full-bodied and surprisingly smooth bourbon with a delicate, long finish that’s unbelievably mellow.

Color: Deep amber
Nose: Fruity, spicy, floral, caramel, vanilla, cocoa, maple syrup, moderately woody.
Palette: Hints of ripe plum & cherries, robust, full body, mellow.
Finish: Smooth & delicately long.
